5 Sci-fi/Fantasy Novels by Black Authors to Read in Any Month
It’s Black History Month, which is the non-disputed only good thing about February. You can find recommendations everywhere for delicious media by Black artists to feast upon this month. I reject the notion that this celebration has to be limited to February. (Also, we’re more than halfway into February and I’m just now writing this.) Here are a handful of excellent sci-fi and fantasy novels by Black authors to check out this month, or in March, April, May—or anytime, really.
For people who want to read one of the best science fiction novels ever written, love aliens, or only have time for one book on this list.
For people who love both urban fantasy and King Arthur retellings, love YA fantasy but have somehow missed this, or would like to see a love triangle that’s actually well-written for once.
An Unkindness of Ghosts by Rivers Solomon
For people who savor lyrical prose, want to read a stand-alone, or prefer characters to be queer and neurodivergent.
The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin
For people who love both science fiction and fantasy, enjoy intertwining points of view, or are captivated by the first line: “Let's start with the end of the world, why don't we?”
The Belles by Dhonielle Clayton
For people who love a unique and intricately crafted world, like their villains evil and terrifying, or are intrigued by deconstructing beauty.
